Discover Your Walking Engine – In Your Own Home This November
Is it better to enhance your walking ability as you age by strengthening your leg and foot muscles, or by developing a clearer awareness of how you walk from your torso, using rotation of your thoracic spine? Perhaps this is a novel idea to many, but if you observe young children who are still moving as an integrated whole, you’ll notice that they use their torso to walk.
Since moving to Florida in 2002, Bonnie Kissam, MA in Dance/Education, Feldenkrais Practitioner, and Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), has been promoting the concept of the “Walking Engine.” She began this work at Glenridge, where she offered classes to improve balance and movement. She later created the Lightness of Walking Program, which became a self-paced program in 2020.
Kissam also developed the Touch to Inform Seminars, providing therapists and educators with continuing education on how to use informed touch to help clients develop greater awareness of their torso. Through this awareness, participants can learn to naturally ease back, neck, and foot discomfort by reclaiming their Walking Engine. Participants will find their balance improving, as well as their ability to walk with more comfort and speed. This November, Bonnie will offer a 15-hour online seminar, held from 6-9 p.m. over five evenings, November 11, 12, 13, 18, and 19.
